This issue is serious enough that I am considering canceling my subscription, which I have had since 2013. [Update 5 after my first review.]

keeps loading itself into foreground. Pick up phone to make a call.... this is already on screen in the way. Middle of night and want to check your schedule... this is in the way again. Seems they added extra "required" permissions recently to authorize this to run at startup every time. I seriously don't want the news constantly in my face depressing me with the latest government stupidity. Especially when I only subscribed for NYT games. I want News when I ask for it and ONLY THEN!!!
The app was not great before the latest update and is now terrible. Search engine is terrible so I had my "You" tab set up so I could easily find my daily reads such as The Morning newsletter. Now that tab is completely changed and the simplest of search for "The Morning Newsletter" brings back garbage results on the search page. And to boot, my Morning notification only took me to the front page, not the newsletter this morning!
When I click a notification to read the article, it takes me to the today tab.

your notifications are leading to home page on Android. there is a whole reddit thread on it. please fix it. this issue started in Jun 2026. fix it pls. otherwise the subscription is useless.

App is getting worse and worse. Now half the time the comments to an article won't open. But the biggest problem is the auto-crashing, which happens daily now. Every time the home page refreshes, I'm taken out of whatever article I'm reading and placed back on the home page. Also, how about giving the app the capacity to remember where you are in an article, so if you have to pause for a few minutes, you don't lose your place and get sent back to the start of the article?
Extremely slow for overall very simple content to display. Fails to load articles on strong wifi and cell connections when other complex apps work great. Despite their pride in the highly Ivy trained reporters, their IT department is the polar opposite. Would give the app zero stars if Google Play gave the option.
The content is great but half the time you click on a push notification they dont work and then you cant find the article. Editing down to one star cause this is the 4th time in a row i couldnt read an article they sent in a push notification.
Broken app, the "You" customization was completely removed because it doesn't work! When you play videos it plays the ad only! OMG The programmers are wholly incompetent, this is the worst app ever!

This app force-refreshes so often it is impossible to finish extended articles. Example: NYT's excerpt of its book on Trump admin's management of the Epstein files. After getting forcibly refreshed 3X, I had to share the link to my notes, then enter it into a third party web archive engine to retrieve the story so I could finish it in peace. This and other gimmicky coding/design choices make subscribing pointless. NYT wants to be TikTok, but sucks at it. Stop. Stasis is your friend.

Uses Immense Amount of Data. Autoplay videos are part of the problem. I'm fine with ads, but data is expensive when used without tegard to customer.
This app is being consistently made worse, despite frequent price hikes. I pay for access, yet still have to scroll through constant ads. I click the comment section of an article, and a scrolling/animated ad immediately appears urging me to "explore more conversations." uhh no thanks, can I just explore the one I clicked on? Geez, it's so obnoxious and anti-user.
I can no longer open the morning newsletter in the app. please fix this!!!
This app functions terribly and is now worthy of its excellent reporting content. It navigates slowly if it navigates at all, it breaks when opening articles from Google, the layout and widgets are atrocious, on and on. Uninstalling. save yourself the headache and use the website.
Trying to concentrate on reading an article while being bombarded with full-page picture and video ads that can't be turned off... doesn't matter if you're a paying subscriber.
Clicking a notification for an article no longer takes you to the article. Instead it takes you to the latest headline and you are forced to scroll through all the headlines to try and find the article you intended to open. This used to work.

Ads for Paying Customers: If you have an NYT membership there doesn't seem to be much advantage to you -as a customer- using the app. Reading the content via a browser with AdBlocking enabled means you don't need to see ads in the product you already paid for. I encourage NYT to remove ads from their app if they want tech savvy people to use it.

Still the best despite opposition smears
New wrinkle: latest update makes comments totally unavailable intermittently for random lengths of time. pp search for articles now even more iffy, no matter what keywords you use; even very unique ones. Search results completely dominated by articles which do not include the search terms and have no relevance; for some reason mostly sports articles. Often the article just can't be found at all. Comments being written vanish without a trace during frequent app data updates.
Love the NYT but in the past few weeks, the app is broken. Anytime you click on either a notification story or a link in their emails, it brings you to the today page instead of the story you clicked on. Its so bloody annoying and means I've barely been reading of late. Please fix this.

New York Times, please fix your app! Links don't work properly, I'm constantly getting booted out of the article I'm reading and it doesn't return to where I was. Super frustrating lately.
I am disappointed with the recent update to the NY Times app. With this update, clicking on notifications no longer opens the relevant article and the You tab no longer shows my favorite columns and sections.

Update, update Over 6 years later and it still happens!! I click on a breaking news notification only to be brought toa completely different article.What is the point of notifying me about an article only to click the notification and not be brought to that article? Every single notification brings me to the home page and cant find the article it mentioned. This app absolutely sucks and needs alot of work. Turned off all notifications because this is horrible. Why am I paying for this?
what the .... ? I used the YOU tab to read what I was interested in and things I might otherwise have missed. Now it's just links to stuff I have already read and shared. what's the point of that? how do I find the curated content? ffs NYT stop messing with what works.
The newest update no longer opens any notification to the intended article, including The Morning, they now only redirect to the Today page. Went to my You tab to quickly find the Morning & was shocked to see it's been updated to only show recently read, saved, & history. I loved the carousel of articles & other sections that would take me directly to other articles/newsletters like the Morning or The Good List that you cant quickly locate. The search feature has been terrible for a long time.
clicking on notifications for stories doesn't take you to the story anymore. It is making me absolutely insane for the past week. If NYT pushes a story through a notification I should be able to select the notification and the advertised story opens. I often have to search for the story I was looking for, and today I couldnt even find it. Please fix!
