Memrise Easy Language Learning

The developer of this application systematically ignores user complaints and feedback. Several months ago, the previous version of the user interface was significantly more pleasant, intuitive, and functional. Despite numerous objections from users, the developer forced a new interface that is clearly worse and additionally removed the ability to study in offline mode. This decision alone noticeably degraded the application.
Even after several updates released following the interface overhaul, the main problems have not been resolved and continue to be ignored. First, users have repeatedly pointed out that the selected difficulty level makes no difference at all. Regardless of whether you choose an advanced level, including C2, the app still sends extremely basic vocabulary that is more appropriate for complete beginners. Receiving A1-level words when C2 is selected means the entire level system is meaningless.
Second, the section with videos from native speakers works extremely poorly. The application sends the same video day after day. Even after marking the video as fully understood and completed, the next day the exact same video appears again, as if no other content exists. This happens constantly and renders the feature useless.
The same flawed logic is applied to vocabulary study. For example, the app claims to offer five new words per day. If it shows three words and you mark two as already known and one as unknown, instead of adding new words to complete the lesson, the app starts repeating that one unknown word endlessly. There is no attempt to balance or properly structure the lesson.
Overall, the application has noticeably degraded in terms of quality and usability. What used to be a functional and pleasant learning tool now appears poorly designed and neglected. If the developer continues to ignore real issues and user feedback, it is no surprise that users choose competitors’ applications instead of this one.

Si el desarrollador continúa ignorando los problemas reales y la retroalimentación de los usuarios, no es sorprendente que los usuarios prefieran aplicaciones de la competencia en lugar de esta.

I chose Irish and then once I actually signed into the app that option was no longer available. What a waste.

I really like that they have videos of real people speaking naturally as part of the learning process, but after a while it forces me to text to a AI chatbot. I hate it! It’s time consuming and not very relevant to what was in the lessons I just learned. It’s not engaging and just robotic. There’s no option to take this feature out while the natural speaking videos has the option to turn off. I stopped using this app cause of how annoyed I was at having to do the chatbot practice so much.

Memrise used to be an amazing language learning tool. Recordings of real people saying words, curated videos that scaled with you as you learned, and just an overall good sense of progression. Now half of the voices are ai generated, the videos are all ai subtitled YouTube rips that are not level appropriate at all, and the sense of progression is just gone.
It’s better than Duolingo but not worth paying for anymore.

To yourself a favor and don't buy this. It didn't work. It doesn't work. It's a waste of time and money. Horrible!

It’s a pretty good app, mostly because it has a lot of variety, but there are languages that won’t load when you try to learn them.

I paid for the lifetime membership to learn Polish since I’m moving there. I made it through absolute beginner and beginner and the content no longer loads in the lessons. I’ve reached out to the company several times, but they won’t get back with me. I’ve paid for a service and product that they are not providing. I want the courses content or a refund, or even just a response from the company. I’ve switched to Babbel, which is a great learning platform.

Sat with a dictionary of Gaeilge to English while in my first lesson. There’s no sound to the words so I can’t figure out how I’m supposed to say the words. Plus, instead of learning basic language first then colloquial slang, you are started with slang. Problem is, slang changes more rapidly. So instead of learning “corn flakes” you are instead taught Irish for “Kellogg’s corn”, which I assume is slang for the brand name type of corn flakes cereal. In addition slang spelling is completely different than that found in the dictionary (paper and online from two different sources). The only proper non-slang word I was given in my first lesson was for “an apple” or “úll” which the app translated as “1 apple” - which will be confusing when/if they get to Apple juice “sú úll” or anything else made with multiple apples.

every other lesson is chatting with an unhelpful AI chatbot. No real structure to the practice and unable to go back and look at old lessons. Would not recommend unless all you want is vocab flash cards, and barely any to choose from.

I don’t get how this app as a 4.8 it was completely unusable for me. Every time I tried to start the very first lesson it wouldn’t even load.

I opened the app for the first time and it said I already reviewed 300 words. Now it keeps testing me on 300 words that I just don’t know. Also it keeps popping up with my streak status every time I press anything. And the app isn’t intuitive. I want to just learn a certain word list and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do that. No offense, but I think this app needs a total overhaul to be user friendly.

haven't used this app for 11 months, but I was suddenly charged over $115 without confirmation. I tried following your email instructions, but I'm stuck in a loop of automated replies. I panicked and deleted my account, so now 'Restore Purchase' doesn't work. I need a full refund as I haven't used the service at all.

I have tried for several days now to get my Lifetime Pro Account restored. They keep sending me files to restore my personal data, but that doesn’t restore my account. When I click on Restore Purchases, I get an error message and try again later. I have tried at least a dozen times over the past five days. Apple Support was great, but they can’t help because it was an in-app purchase. Maybe I can get American Express involved, although the purchase was in December of 2024.

It was the best app for learning languages. Until they changed it completely. Then, you could learn at your own pace. Repeat lessons and practice. Now you have to score points to advance, you can’t keep track of your progress and do it at your own pace. Why did you do that? The app is unusable now.

I was excited to use this app but it has not worked for me at all. When I sign in, it keeps freezing when I log in. I’ve contacted and submitted a zendesk ticket but no solution. Especially since I purchased a membership I expect the app to work.

Doesn’t want to open

Nice combination of spoken and written exercises, but it will no longer load new lessons for me and I am only a few days in after having paid for the pro subscription. Filed a bug report, no response as of yet. Went through uninstall/reset phone/reinstall to no avail.

It was fine when I used it the first day but it wont work

Just came back after a several year hiatus. And see despite what appears to be a complete revamp of the app nobody thought adding a placement test was worthwhile?
I’m not going through every level and marking every word i know as “already known” seriously? Hard pass.
Or even worse starting as an “absolute beginner” and going through stuff I already known.
Believe it or not, not every person who installs this app is new to the language they’re learning. 🤯

I have never been more disgusted with an app like Memrise. No matter how many times you download it, no matter how many times you clear your cookies, no matter how many times you deleted and start over--it is still the same result. Nothing. The app continues to show loading. This app has the potential to be such a excellent useful tool, but obviously the creators are too sorry to make an app that doesn’t continually crash. So therefore I would advise you not even to waste your time. The app is when it works. I even purchased the subscription thinking that might make the situation better, it didn’t. Don’t waste your time, patience, or money.

The app wont stop loading. I haven’t been able to log on and learn for weeks. Uninstalling and reinstalling does not work, and based on the other reviews- this isn’t just a me problem. Please fix

I tried this out, but started on a level of Norwegian that was too easy. I deleted my progress and started again at a higher level. I choose a few word lists and the loading wheel started up and never stopped. I left the app open on my phone for long time and it never succeeded in loading. I tried deleting and reinstalling but it made no difference.

I was excited to use the app but unfortunately within an hour of signing up and looking through the app it stopped working all together.

More than half of Japanese vocabulary audios are missing after the 1,400th words. Also, where are my courses? Why are my listening and practicing courses missing?

You have to memorize phrases instead of learning how to put vocabulary together. Doesn’t teach grammar. Often confusing as to what is being specifically asked.

One of the best apps for the included languages. Unfortunately, as of late the included sentence builder bot has been broken. It will introduce what you have to do next but never offer options for the multiple choice and sometimes forego questions. You can skip these exercises and the other tools work fine, but you are missing a sizable portion of the roadmap if you do this. Everything used to work fine, and I’m hoping this issue is fixed soon.

Bought a lifetime membership ship almost a year ago, before the whole AI thing was added. Loved it before it changed. Kind of regret having spent so much on the membership. It’s not horrible, but I definitely wouldn’t have bought a membership for it now. It’s hard to go back in review without having to use an AI bot. It glitches out every time I try to use said bot. So underwhelmed with that update and probably won’t be using this app much anymore if I’m going to be honest.

I have been paying for this app for 3 years now - to learn Japanese. Everything started out well; learning simple words and phrases came easily. However, the app stopped teaching grammar, so for about a year or so all it has done was try to teach me new nouns and verbs. No sentence building, so scenarios- just words. This is great if you’re taking classes and want to reinforce your vocabulary, but if you’re trying to actually learn the language this app will not work.

When I originally planned to subscribe permanently, I found that the original discount for permanent subscription was changed from 70% to 65%. This makes people feel very bad.

Exercises include examples where the Hanzi character shown does have the correct English letters to select from, so the word is counted as an error and repeated over and over even though it is not possible to enter the correct answer. Other examples include where there is no Mandarin word or character presented, i.e. the question is blank, but you are expected to select from 4 possible answers. I was foolish to have purchased this app. Stick with the free version.

I have been using the free app of Memrise. It has been helpful to learn some Italian words. However, when it comes to the constructing sentences portion, the app often freezes and states that it cannot continue.
Sometimes it appears to have the wrong words as options to complete a sentence.
There are often ads to purchase the paid version of Memrise; however, as the free app is glitchy, I’m leery about paying for a Memrise, as it may also have glitches .
Perhaps if the free version of the app worked flawlessly I might be inclined to pay for the paid version of Memrise.

This app doesn’t have great lessons that help and give random words to learn instead of teaching you words in order and is just sloppy.

The app is good but introducing ai sentence building that is incorrect and slow to get through is just annoying. I dread those lessons and when I try to use a word I learned it goes "no you can't use that word."
it asked me to build a sentence in Portuguese "we have ___ to eat." I tried to use fruta but it told me I have not learned that and I should use uma mesa instead because I learned it. I was told uma mesa means table, so it told me eating fruit is wrong but eating a table is correct.
It s so unnecessary just leave it out. You are paying a company to provide you ai that does not work, why waste your money the sentence building lessons are a slog to get through.
