Doesn’t let you install earlier versions
My ipad refuses to update and now I can’t read the news. I have the option to use earlier versions of New York Times cooking so I’m not sure why I can’t with this one
Sign one
I’ve been a subscriber since 2011. I really hate how the Times forgets you’re signed in and requires you to sign in again and makes it impossible to sign in without having to do the app. I hate using the NYT app.

Content and news side great, but they removed ability to listen to podcasts on iPad
Since NYT discontinued support for the standalone NYT Audio app, they’ve been advertising that it’s now included on the home screen under the “Listen Tab.” The functionality of this tab is a significant downgrade on iPhone as it is (poor queueing, double audio, bugs), but it is egregious that the tab is completely missing from the iPad version of the app. The NYT Audio app was excellent. The Listen tab either doesn’t exist or is hot garbage.
Too many notifications
I left one notification enabled, for “urgent and important stories”, but I got a notification about arrivals at the Met Gala. Clearly NYT has a different definition of “urgent “ and “important”, and it won’t be issuing any more notifications to my device.
I find a lot of apps do this, but it really shows a lack of user testing that the entire UI of the “You” section jumps after a spinner disappears as loading completes. I have to wait for it to tap the button I want. It’s right there, but the moment I try to tap it, the whole screen jumps up and I end up tapping something else. Drives me nuts.

Extreme Leftist Bias
This is just shameful
Latest app version keeps freezing
NYT moved Games to the top nav, and now the app is constantly freezing. Have to force quit to be able to tap on anything.
Why tracking your private data?
So why in a paid subscription are they tracking you and looking at all your phone data as well? Spoiler, there is no good reason.
Video doesn’t work
Several years after I wrote my first review about the video not working in this app, it’s still a problem. Could you please, for the love of all things holy, get this fixed? I don’t understand why this is so difficult.
Buggy
has gotten worse. page jumps around as you’re scrolling

Why you ask for one
Stinks
Times app and website is going down the tubes.
Spoken output not available on all articles
Why is spoken output available on some articles and not others? It seems like sloppiness on the part to the NYT. For me the spoken output is important. If an article does not have it then I am going to skip that article. So my my point of view, articles without spoken output do not exist.
Botched search feature
Can’t find recipes even if I copy and paste the title. Clickbait headlines. I would enjoy this much more if it were like the print edition.
So desperately WULF
I don’t mind some bias in a newspaper. But it sinks too deep into everything the NYT prints. I don’t want to pay to read propaganda.
Quality doesn't matter, neither do customers
NYT Games on iPad has a reproducible navigation trap in Pips - after finishing a game, there is no exit path. Only workaround is force‑quitting. Reported multiple times over months. This is a one‑hour fix for any competent iOS engineer. Why is this still broken?
Double Charged
My The Athletic subscription was migrated to All-Access NYT in 2022 according to My Account page, however they continued to bill $72 annually for past 4 years.
Cancelling because of Piker
I am canceling my subscription because it seems to me that the Times is grooming Hasan Piker as their new poster boy, first an article from Klein about how he’s never done anything wrong, which was the Times presenting him to their base who has never heard of Piker. Now it seems Piker is just a regular member of the Editorial staff, despite his calls to murder landlords in the streets.
Ads with expensive Subscription
This app still has ads even after paying a pricey subscription. The ads look like news articles to clickbait you. You don’t expect this after you subscribe.
STOP ENABLING AUTO PLAY VIDEO AND AUDIO
Title says it all. Update changed auto play settings and caused a problem when it played and volume was high. Stop changing those settings on me! Just stop already.
Lacking search capability??
It is so ridiculous to have a News app without a search function.
Trump felating.
No longer a serious source of news. Puzzles are nice, though.
Liberal Bias.
Repetitive equals boring.
Left Wing Bias
I want to go to a new source where every article that I read is not slanted as an anti-Trump bias. I’m not pro Trump or anti-Trump, but it’s obvious which way this newspaper leans and which agenda they are pushing.

Glitchy app
Love the NYT but the app has recently become very glitchy on an up to date late model iPhone. Regularly when I open the app it will open to “Today” but be totally unresponsive. Won’t scroll, open articles, etc. The only solution is to close it and then re open it. Unacceptable from an organization as large as the NYT, especially given it’s a paid service.
Careful with sly price increases
Downloaded the app with a promotion and then it went up 12 fold and then again 25 fold from original offer.
Ads for paying subscribers
I’m seeing so many ads while scrolling the news.
If the NY times core value proposition is good journalism, then it’s allowing its biggest stories to be watered down by whoever is willing to pay the most.
Add an ad-free tier.

Very unintuitive!
I find this app to be a big miss! I like the video content but this app gets in the way of accessing it. In the shorts tab I can’t start a clip over, clicking it takes me to the associated podcast with no visual content. I can’t find the long form videos I want.
When I had a 30 minute video in my feed every single time I had to brief navigate away, because I need to use my phone, the episode would literally start over from the beginning. It would take 30 seconds plus for the video to load once I found the spot again.
This app tries to support interesting content but throws all sorts of frictions in front of the user. Make this app more natural and intuitive, please!

NY Times
I’ve had an ongoing problem accessing the Real Estate. After several frustrating calls to NYT customer service the problem has not been resolved. Very aggravating

Ads dominate news
The NYT app is primarily built to deliver advertising. The experience as a news app is always second to banner ads. As a longtime subscriber, I can’t understand why the UX team doesn’t prioritize the news or original content. The app should be renamed the NYT Ads app.
Version 11.69 No Longer Useful on Older iPad
The NY Times app version 11.69 no longer works on my older iPad. I looked forward to playing the games at midnight. I will probably not renew because it’s much nicer to play the games on the iPad than the smaller iPhone screen and Games is the main reason I have the NY Times subscription.
NYT has veered
You used to provide a neutral perspective in the news pages. You used to avoid doom mongering. On both scores, you are much worse. I have read the New York Times for approximately 60 years. I believe you are intentionally marketing to a different audience and have left me behind.

Almost Unusable
The New York Times appears to have made some major changes in account access, and ease of use. Don't know whether it's because they are trying to push family accounts or increase revenue, or some other reason… but I am constantly being told I need to re-enter my login information, decline an upgrade in my subscription, or worse yet, navigate away to request a one time code and by the time I get back to enter it it's expired.
There appears to be no way to actually speak to a human being other than through chat, and no email address is offered to file a formal complaint. Warning any potential new subscribers out there that at this kind of constant interference is annoying for you, you may wish to find a different source.

Those Annoying Flashing Ads
In the early days of the New York Times app, video ads begin appearing, very distracting to reading the content. I complained and I think many others did too because these videos soon disappeared. Now this annoyance has come back full force, with flashing ads that are a major distraction from reading the content. On an iPhone, you cannot escape them as no matter how you scroll - there will be flashing at the top of the screen, as well as at the bottom, I cannot take it for more than a 3-4 minutes - I have shut down the app and go find my news in other places.
Offline reading for subway commuters is broken
Paid subscribers who commute underground can’t reliably access saved content offline. This used to work. It’s degraded the core daily use case.
Old app was way better
This is difficult to navigate, especially to hear one episode or feature after the other
Horrible search functionality
The content is good, the tech / UX team is incompetent.
Why do you make it difficult for readers to find the sections they want? Don’t get too cute - your UX
team is bad. Just stick to basics.

More balance please
Hyperbolic headlines erode my trust in the NYT.
Hobbled sports coverage
The app hobbles functionality in sports coverage in an attempt to have you download a redundant(useless) second app. Scammer style behavior.
Too many notifications
The amount of breaking news alerts on a given day is insane. The threshold for what gets pushed to everyone should be higher
Navigation is awful
Finding one’s away around this app is a nightmare and I still have no idea how to do a search. Sure, the content is great, but the Times should be able to make a usable app.
App makes every shared article a gift article
The newest version of the app charges every shared article against my gift article balance. I’ve reported it through the app without reply from NYT. I’ve deleted and reinstalled the app with no success. Please fix this issue ASAP.
Horrible online service
Are they trying to limit readership and subscriptions? The app is not user friendly, does not show the same articles as the paper, the search function is worthless. The reporting is great but why subscribe if they only deliver headaches?
Audio section of app not as good
I miss the separate audio app that was discontinued in September 2025. The audio section of this app is not as user friendly. It is more difficult to navigate, such as add articles to a queue or to stop and come back later. Please bring back more functionality.
