★★★★★ "nope. Viewranger was perfect the way it was. I can’t find those capabilities in this app; this feels like a bait and switch. Am not signing up for the subscription model, especially at these prices," - xfrosch

★★★★★ "You pay a full year for what they call a trial. It says you have a trial subscription but it charges you a full year. I tried to cancel within a week but couldn’t. You can’t evaluate the app without access to the paid service so this is a sneaky trap. After comparing, I prefer Kamoot." - Tommy5970

★★★★★ "Paid for a legacy map, they handicap it to encourage payment. Outdoor active bought view ranger, and has now disabled features for lifetime users who paid for maps. Makes it’s virtually unusable. Doesn’t reply to requests for help. See multiple other reviews like this they never have fixed it." - Napshenennmdkdnd

They ignore your privacy and notification settings
No matter how many times you disable the privacy settings or turn off notifications within an hour they’re all back on.
This use to be a great app
They ruined the app. So complicated. Nothing works anymore. Constantly quitting and restarting the app as you get ‘lost’ in it.
Almost died
The map got me lost, going through what was not even a path. Then came to a stream crossing the path and no bridge. So I had to turn around. I have disabilities and planned the 1.6 mile, I had to walk 3.5 to get back to the entrance of the park.
Locked out
It’s impossible to reset my password, I’m stuck in a loop (tried both phone and laptop)

chill man
this app slaps you in the face with their paywall way too much. won’t buy subscription just because of how annoying it is.
Buggy
Keeps zooming out every time I try to zoom in.
Doesn’t honor purchases
I paid for lifetime U.S. maps with Neotreks, then Accuterra, then ViewRanger. Now this company has bought ViewRanger, and they are the first to not honor my lifetime maps download.
After this poor review, they allowed download, but they have disabled zooming out, so you can’t see enough of the area to make any decisions or see landmarks. They also don’t allow adding waypoints or creating a plan based on coordinates.
Cannot recommend.

Not work
It is impossible to recover the password. A password reset message is sent to the mail, but the reset does not work!!!

App has gotten worse
This used to be my go to for finding routes and hikes in the alps. Unfortunately now they've hidden most hikes behind a paywall. A lot of the "premium curated" hikes are just hikes which are publically/alpine club maintained trails. You can still find these if you search for info at the local or regional tourist offices.
Bring back view ranger
They tanked a wonderful app just to make this abomination.
How to activate my account
Got redirected from ViewRanger app and the account from ViewRanger is not able to reset password.
Too much!
I had a great hiking app. It’s gone and now this app, which got a subscription to, keeps asking me to upgrade. I don’t want to, What I WOULD Like to do is set the fields on the map but apparently it’s not available. My POIs don’t show up. I have load every time I use the app. Does it track - yes. It’s just not user friendly.
Why can’t I add my waypoints to an active track?
I already paid for the app and I get a prompt every time I open the app to buy pro.
I can’t create a “ my map”!
Downgrading to 1 star!

Don’t get the free trial
Canceled my free trial within 2 days of the renewal date and was charged 61 dollars for the full year. They would not make an exception or change it to the monthly rate. Ridiculous for an app I will never use. AllTrails is way better.
Scummy business practices
They acquired ViewRanger just to shut it down. Their service is not comparable. ViewRanger allowed you to save maps for offline reference for free, and this app requires a pricy annual subscription.
Engages in theft
This app requires you to purchase a “Pro” membership to download offline maps. It takes your money, then when you want to download, it loads a screen that tries to sell you a more expensive “Pro Plus” membership without allowing you to download anything. I sent a message to their customer support complaining about this issue and never got a response. Don’t pay the owners of this app a penny unless you like throwing money away.
Doesn’t have my map I’ve used for 10 years
I’ve been with accuterra, neotreks, ViewRanger and now Outdooractive. I can’t understand where my simple topo map is that shows color coded land ownership (BLM, NF, Wilderness, state and private lands.)
ViewRanger was so simple to use, zoom in on an area you are headed to while in cell range and you could rely on it anywhere offline.
I understand your wanting to have a more in depth inclusive app. But it’s useless without the map I’ve used for 10 years and my waypoints. Is there a plan to fix this? Or should I move on. Also I emailed a month ago with these questions and zero response. But today I got an advertisement about a through hiker which is cool but it reminded how useless this app is to me.

Nope
App keeps booting me out. Can record track but to view after or any other function it doesn’t work for me. I have iOS update and app updated. Help center doesn’t have Report problem avail although it states it does.
View ranger was better
Not only did I loose my lifetime subscription but the over all app is garbage compared to view ranger. Thousands of points that don’t work properly on this app now. Motion-x is way better but unfortunately still not ViewRanger. Swallow your pride and re-open the ViewRanger app so we can use it. Also if you want us to use your map we need a way to permanently set our old waypoints onto the map and always have them available. ViewRanger was a outdoors app where many of us wondered off the grid. Your app is useless.
You killed viewranger!!!
View ranger was far better with lots of free options. This app has no free features.
Not Impressed
Such a downgrade from ViewRanger. Can’t see prior friends - not a good social app.
Please bring back ViewRanger
Being the acquiring company you probably have a big ol’ bias choosing between this and ViewRanger. I’d like to add my voice to the choir asking for ViewRanger back. This app is feature bloated, user interface is a mess (4 different ways to access a map, each with its own quirks) and the best features of ViewRanger are lacking.
Constant ads
Open the app and try to select your activities and you are constantly bombarded by bitcoin app ads. Just what I want to see in my outdoor app! They fill so much space I can hardly avoid clicking them!
This “ViewRanger replacement” will inevitably fail, and get sued
I paid for ViewRanger. Im not paying for another 30 dollar per year app that cant even present a lat long. None of the integration works from the switch. Thanks for ruining a good app, u will ultimately fail and maybe even have a class action suit against u for all these comments i see regarding a new paid prescription when we paid for lifetime access to ViewRanger!
View Ranger Replacement - Awful!
This is a bad replacement for the excellent View Ranger which it replaced. Every week a new update to push you to buy Pro version. To be deleted.
Disappointed
I’ve been a long time user of ViewRanger which merged with OutdoorActive.
All the premium maps that I purchased along with the existing AR functionality to mark landmarks on the skyline are now locked behind a subscription paywall that costs more per year than my original one-time purchase.
Account migration claims to include access to purchased maps, but I haven’t seen them show up yet. So many ads.

I want view ranger back
I paid for lifetime subscription “USA Slopes” “USA topo” etc… I can’t see or understand anything on this app. View ranger I was able to zoom out and see the whole state where I’ve dirt bike, snowmobile, kayak, hot air balloon ride, etc.. this app I can see like 1 mile??? I’m not happy about this switch over.. 3 months free then I’ll have to pay? I already paid for lifetime subscription maps with view range, down load area & use off line. I believe this app should honor that and it should be identical to view ranger app.
Downgrade from ViewRanger
Very disappointed after migrating from view ranger to see that all of my lifetime map subscriptions are gone. If you are in search of a new gps mapping app maybe you will like this. I personally won’t pay for a subscription to something I already bought. If I am going to pay I will use other apps that are better suited for my needs.
useless for offline navigation
This app is supposed to replace Viewranger, which I used for offline navigation in many countries and always found easy to use and perfectly reliable. In contrast, Outdoor Active lacks easy access to key functions and can’t be relied on in the field. This makes it useless in the mountains or anywhere else where reliable offline navigation is a must.
Coming from ViewRanger, I hate this app.
This app is so full of extra stuff, that it is hard to find exactly what you need. ViewRanger would also allow you to download much larger areas for offline use. I’ve used ViewRanger for years for topo maps when doing consulting work and this app just doesn’t do what I need it to do.
Beware! This is a dodgey outfit
Their app and webpage make it (deceptively?) difficult to cancel pending subscriptions and they don’t give customer refunds. I’ve been fleeced for $36.55. Buyer beware.
Account hell
Subscription hell. Account hell. Constant “sign up” annoyances make the app unusable
Doesn’t work
I cannot even get them to send me an activation email so I have no idea if this app is even worth it. I’ve tried 5 times. Email is correct.
Buggy - won’t recognise eligible tracks
Been using ODA for over a year and at the start of 2026 I was looking forward to the new challenges but immediately the app fails to recognise eligible hiking tracks, even leave the challenge and rejoining the challenge does not help when neither tracks are then recognised unlike last year when challenges took seconds to recognise eligible tracks regardless of when you’ve joined the challenge.

Subscription subscription subscription
Eeeeeeeeeeevery app wants 9 million dollars a month now for their stupid app. Like this… outdoor junk - maybe 10 dollars a done… at most! Come on greedy people… enough already. Yeesh!!!

Not sure if I’m missing something?
Dear Outdoor Active,
I was a big fan of ViewRanger and was sad when it stopped being provided. I was primarily using it for hiking, paragliding and boating mainly because the data feeds were so customizable.
I’m not sure if I’m missing something, or the functionality just isn’t there, but I can’t customize the data displays to show info such Course, Heading, SOG, ETA Waypoint and ETA Destination, etc.
If it has this then I would be happy with this app.
Cheers,
Ian

Need to fix battery use!
I really like the routes, the maps, and all the detail but it’s killing the batteries on my iphone. The phone gets hot after a few minutes, really not ideal for a hike.
Near useless for me
Outdooractive would need to compare favorably to my most-used biking and hiking apps, namely Gaia and Strava. I couldn’t find much in Outdooractive’s favor. To begin with, the app seemed to think I was in Europe. Locations in Italy and Switzerland came up and when I shifted the map to the west coast of the US, nothing appeared. Then click a different part of the app and the focus was on Europe again.
I used only the free features, determining that I would pay for the app only if the free features seemed to indicate there were worthwhile additional gems in the paid content. I saw no reason to continue. Deleted the app.

Not a ViewRanger replacement
I’ll need to search for a different app to replace ViewRanger.
This app is OK, but is a downgrade.

Too Many Problems
Something always seems to be broken.
Sometimes the watch app crashes every 1-2 minutes.
Other times it doesn’t record activity to my fitness app.
The watch app continuously asks for permission to access the Health app.
The tracking is always saying I’m off track or going the wrong way when I’m not and then immediately notifying that I’m back on track.
I want to like this but it’s not worth it.
