The Update is Bad
I have had Shudder basically since the beginning and seen this platform in a few iterations, but the new update I really don’t understand. I am specifically reviewing the Apple TV app, so I’m not sure if these issues extend to other updates that may have been done to the website or any apps through other devices. I’m still playing around with it, but here are a few things I’ve noticed and hate:
1. The movies no longer tell you what language they are in. They used to show this when you clicked to learn more about the film, but it’s all gone. So now I either have to Google the movie to find out if it’s a foreign film or let it start playing and wait to see what happens. I like a foreign film, but I don’t always want to watch them and so now I’m having to do a lot more work and honestly, it’s making me just not engaged movies that I’m not familiar with.
2. The new descriptions of movies are really bad. We used to get a few sentences about what to expect and it’s now been reduced to a one sentence AI looking summary that don’t even really make sense in some cases. I truly think someone was tasked with taking every summary and throwing it into an AI bought and asking them to change it into a one sentence in summary.
3. The search feature no longer lets you use the microphone option to search for movies. So now I either have to type in what I’m looking for, or go searching for it in one of the categories, or what’s more commonly happening is I will say the movie into the Apple TV remote, and then Apple defaults to all sorts of other apps to play these movies in before Shudder so I’m just not engaging the platform as much as I used to and watching movies other places.
4. The TV feature stinks. We used to have three dedicated channels which now has been reduced to one and it’s hard to find. On the homepage it’s kind of hidden in the middle of everything and if you go to the left menu, you have to scroll down to see that it’s even at the bottom. If you don’t want to do TV anymore, just get rid of it, but this “update” is bad.
Like I said, I’m still playing around with the app, but it just feels like someone took like a Hulu or Netflix overlay and forced it upon Shudder. It’s genuinely sad because this used to feel like a thing that was run with so much love for the genre and run by people who really understood the horror community and now it just looks and feels like everything else. I mean genuinely it looks like the Screambox app now, but at least Screambox lets us search by genre of horror.
I’m not to the point of canceling yet, but this update is really making me question why I’m even continuing the service. It feels like we just keep losing anything that makes Shudder special and when you couple that with an update to the app that has made the offering worse, what’s the point?

So this new “improved” app eliminated 2/3 of the collections, reduced the movie descriptions to like 7 words max, and completely eliminated basic information like director, cast, and language. But at least now I can have my name on my profile?

They canceled the one show that was carrying their entire subscriber base & platform
If they didn’t value the show that brought them virtually their entire subscriber base, then they won’t value you as a subscriber either! The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs & Darcy was the one show that encompassed everything a horror fan could want and after 7 seasons of people only subscribing to them for this show…they canceled it…and then the series finale was filled with errors and issues (audio/video out of synch, screen going black every 30 seconds, booting us all out completely at one point, etc.) Then, to make matters even worse they went on X and posted as though they were big fans of both the show and the fans of the show and even posted “Joe Bob Forever!” WHEN THEY WERE THE ONES WHO CANCELLED THE SHOW. Suffice to say, I canceled my subscription immediately and do not recommend them. I will be following Joe Bob and Darcy on whatever network or platform they go to.

FIX THE APP PLEASE
I keep needing to log into the app multiple times PER DAY. Sometimes even after watching a film, the app fails to respond so I restart it only to find that it’s asking me to login yet again. Not a day goes by where I can remain signed on. Absolutely ridiculous in this day and age such a basic thing can’t be resolved.

Shudder App no longer works on iPadOS 15.8.5
The Shudder app crashes immediately during loading since the most recent Shudder app update. PLEASE fix it! I need it to watch Joe Bob live! I am a Software Architect & tried everything. I uninstalled it, then rebooted, then reinstalled. I’ve got the latest version of the app. I even tried some hacking methods. Shudder is just DOA on iPad. Did you test it? Are you abandoning iPadOS 15? If you fix it I’ll update my review to 5 stars. I am a long time subscriber!!!

Don’t get shudder
I got shudder for some horror films but decided to cancel after about a year. I cancelled it and then continued to get payments taken out and thought maybe I didn’t cancel it because I couldn’t remember in all honesty. So then I canceled it again, took pictures of cancellation so I could be sure. And yet they still charged me again for the month of December even though I cancelled in October. Save yourself the headache and don’t get shudder because they will steal from you!!!

Thieving Shudder app

Terrible Licensing issues
I subscribed thinking that I am going to get all of the old Joe Bob Briggs episodes from every season of “The Last Drive-In”..Nope..More than half of the episodes from every season have been removed due to Shudder losing the licenses to continue showing the episodes containing those films..Only reason I wanted Shudder was for Joe Bob..Take Joe Bob’s episodes down, I’m out..

Vizio app doesn’t work and always logs out, and Airplay never works. Always says it cant load or too many people are on the account even though I’m the only person.

The Most Faulty Streaming Platform I’ve Ever Used
I have a subscription to mainly watch Dragula on my Roku tv or on the mobile app. Love the content Shudder has but both the app on my phone and TV are by far the most faulty platforms I’ve ever used, especially for a paid subscription!! The app on my phone constantly crashes and gives errors while playing a movie/show that closes what I’m watching. PLEASE FIX THESE BUGS!! Shudder also is constantly unable to load any of the movie/tv thumbnails so I either have to blindly browse through blank titles or search for something specific. By far the most frustrating streaming app I’ve used which makes me question having the subscription in the first place.

Love horror hate shudder
Consistently for the first 2 weeks of October it won’t play a single thing on the app, I live in the middle of the Midwest US and it says I’m out of the states every single time. Tried restarting, logging out, and tried streaming on FIVE different devices in my house. Wi-Fi works great for everything else. Support could care less and by the time I’m able to watch anything (if that will ever happen) the season will be over. Will not be giving this garbage streaming service another dime for the rest of my days this is the third year I’ve tried this app and it consistently disappoints. I still have a lot of stuff I’d like to see on it but if I have to go another year with simply trying to stream the ambient Ghoul Log and it turns into a 45 minute ordeal before giving up I’m going to tear my eyes off. Screw Shudder.

Lately I’ve been looking for better horror movies so I turned to shudder after signing up on my phone I browsed through the selections and was delighted. I tried signing into my account on my Apple TV but it didn’t recognize my username or password, ( I wrote down the password as I created my account). Looking at my phone it was still signed in so I thought maybe if I sign out I can sign in on the tv, NOPE just unable to access my account, the forgot password/username function Dosent work and I never received a email, and looking for support shudder Dosent offer any so I’m working to get the charge taken off my card thanks shudder!

Unable to watch tech support offers nothing
I’ve been a long time subscriber and pay for the annual membership. Suddenly only this app stops working on 3 different platforms (TVs) and all other streaming services work with no issues at all. Tech support only says it must be my internet service and not the update that is causing the problem, but no other services are having any issues. Because I always pay for the annual, I’m out the money until the normal cancel period even though I am unable to actually use the app. Avoid.

Glitchy app, feels like a scam
Nearly every time I try to watch Shudder, it logs me out. I have been a subscriber for 5 years, and during all that time, this has been an issue. Recently, I was trying to watch a live streaming event, and on three separate devices the app showed me my account but refused to let me watch any content. I am being billed, but when I try to watch Shudder, all I get are pop ups about needing to pay them. Contact “customer service” and I’m on day 3 of no acknowledgement or support. Throw in the low resolution and poor film selection compared to Tubi…This company is ridiculous. Really feels like a total scam.

Can't Browse Before Signing Up.

The permissions used for this app are shocking. It’s like a data miners dream come true. No way are the majority of these highly invasive permissions needed to run and for users to use this app. Go and click the thing that lets you learn more about permissions that is on every App Store page. Search History, not even App search history, financial info, User Content etc. read the explanations for the permissions that Apple gives. No way this app or any app needs all of those. It’s like signing away your privacy using this app. Shoving permissions, man. Read what they all allow any company to see.

Apparently, the only way you can even see what content is offered is by starting your free trial. That's kind of pointless. If I can't even view what's offered, why would I want to sign up for a "free" trial that charges me if I don't remember to cancel it or can't for some reason? But, maybe that's actually the sleazy motivation behind demanding people give you a way to charge them without the benefit of actually letting them see what they might be charged for. Really pretty immoral in my book. It's not like a regular business that would most likely refund your money if that happened. Once they get your money here, say goodbye, you have no recourse to ever see it again. Which, again, is the entire point of not even letting customers see what they are signing up for.
Yes, the trial is free for 7 days or so. But I would suspect they do this in hopes of people forgetting to cancel said trial at the end of the week like I said. I'm not very motivated or enticed to do even try the free trial if I have no idea what's in the app. That's pretty ridiculous in my opinion and I can't imagine I'm the only person who just deleted the app because of this oversight.
But, it's not an oversight like I mentioned. They hope you'll like what you see at least past seven days or forget past seven days to cancel the trial, where they already have your credit card ready to be charged. I don't trust "free" trials. If you don't feel confident enough in what you're offering to let potential customers browse that content to see if they even want to start a trial. Well, to me that says that maybe what is offered might not be that great.
Plus, I seem to remember that when the app/service first launched, that they might have allowed you to browse what was available in the app/service. Which, I believe I did this but was unimpressed with what was offered. Still, I saw the app in Apple's annoying default stories page and then read lots of positive reviews here and I thought "Hey, maybe they actually added some good content. I'll just download the app again and browse it to see if I'd like to subscribe to it." But, nope, pretty sure they just removed that ability for no other reason than what I outlined above.
And I'm sure they would say something akin to "You are free to browse our content, just sign up for the free trial and if you don't like it, cancel it before it ends." But, if they do say that, well, they didn't read any of what I said above and just hitting the button for pre-programmed review replies like every other apathetic company out there. I mean, really, most of the Shudder replies all say something similar to "We are adding great new stuff all the time, we are always looking to improve!". Of course, they don't even respond to the couple of reviews I read from customers who are hearing disabled and would like to see closed captions for all the titles. That also said a lot to me. They seemed more to respond to people who were praising the service, as compared to many reviews I read with legitimate concerns, problems or requests.
But, that's kind of besides the point, except to illustrate that corporate apathy I mentioned. My main point is that being a big horror fan and being enticed by the claims of much more content added from the reviews. Well, there's a good chance I would have purchased a subscription finally. But, the fact that you demand I start a trial to even browse what's available, and browsing is all I'd like to do without starting a trial, not watch, just browse! Well, the fact that you took that ability away or never had it, which I'm about positive you used to, means you just lost me as a potential customer. I gave this service two tries and I can see it was a wasted effort now and won't be back a third time since you are not confident enough in what you offer to let potential customers even view that content before giving you the ability to possibly charge them.
That's not a great way to attract new subscribers in my opinion. But, it's you're business. Don't expect great things coming soon from me in terms of me paying you for what I can't see without starting a trial though, haha. And, again, it's just ridiculous I think that you won't let potential customers even see what's offered. Do you have that little faith in your own service? It's your loss though, not mine. And a stupid way to run a business I think.

Canceled subscription
I have had this subscription canceled since November and it’s still been charging my account. I have tried disputing the charges and calling to see the problem but no such luck. If you want to cancel good luck. Just so you know based on how long it’s been is near the end of January and they are still charging my card.
