Ads are out of control. Storage for the app just hit 1GB. Why does this app need 1GB of space? Designed by script kiddies using Claude AI who don’t know about responsible cache sizes.

I was very excited to be able to replace my google watchlist with this app until I realized I couldn’t find 80% of the titles. I have hundreds of shows and movies on my google watchlist and only found 14 on Letterboxd, that makes this app useless.

Like so many have already stated here (and letterboxd has ignored), the ads in the last month have become so in your face and aggressive, they pop up every few seconds while you scroll, and even though you don’t touch anything, they still open up a new window in Safari. It’s obviously their intent to make us so annoyed that we purchase an upgrade (which is never gonna happen for me now). Funny thing is I’d been thinking on and off of upgrading this past year, but now I know for sure I won’t because fukem. I was going to upgraded to pro so I could choose my own movie posters (since they purposely use so many awful ones…to get us to upgrade of course), but after they changed that feature to an upgraded upgrade above pro, I decided I’d stick with their ugly ones. If there had been even the slightest chance left that I still might upgrade, these new ad tactics have blown those thoughts out of the water. I know they need to make money and I’m not complaining about free users having to see ads. It’s the specific kind of ads that are simply way too intrusive, and frankly a lot of them are AI and grotesque too, but it’s the constantly taking over the entire screen while

I get needing to make some money, but getting your audio hijacked every time you open the app was the beginning of the end for me, and the revolting full page ad that lagged my phone out like crazy just now was the final straw. Guess I’ll delete it and just use the web version going forward. Too bad none of the paid options are worthwhile, either. Why does literally everything have to suck horribly now?

I’ve had a letterboxd account for a couple years now and only in the past few months have the embedded advertisements on the mobile app gotten so egregious that it’s barely usable. In line video ads that should stay small and in the article/page full screen themselves without being touched and open a website in my browser, also without being touched. Most of the time I can’t even see them when it happens. It’s unacceptable.

Can't Login No Matter What
I used to have a Letterboxd account that I haven't used in about a year and decided to start using it again. Come to find out that my credentials "don't match due to a possible human error", except I used a password manager for this and had just reset the password. I'm effectively blocked out of my account and not even their websites HELP section works, instead redirecting me to the home creen again.
Unacceptable full-screen GAMBLING ads
UPDATE: As if this couldn’t get any worse, Letterboxd now has full screen gambling ads that pop up and overtake your screen when you’re reading a review. Unusable and disgusting.

I am giving one star for the horribly obnoxious ads they added that play a pop up video and then follow you around to every part of the app you go to. Absolutely unacceptably intrusive. The app has gone downhill with all the one-sentence “joke” “reviews” that clutter new movies so you can’t find any well thought out analyses of films unless you wade through all the facile influencers. I’ll probably change my review back to a 4 star if the video ads I mentioned go away though because I still like the app well enough.

Waste of money
Does not allow you to keep a list of your streaming services. You must navigate to streaming selections EVERY SINGLE TIME you want to view what’s on a particular service. I just paid for this today and would get a REFUND if I could. I am thoroughly disgusted with Letterboxd and myself for getting excited and not taking time to explore the app in more depth.
Unskippable video ads
Used to be a nice app. Ads are unbearably intrusive now. App is no longer functional. Use the website instead, or don’t bother with it at all.

Song Sung Bkue Ad
If you’re going to put an ad for a movie on the front page above my friend’s reviews, the least it could do is open the movie in Letterboxd, not the movie’s website. I don’t want to buy tickets through my review app. I do not want an ad for a movie on my movie review app. It feels like I’m opening Fandango or AMC everytime and I usually just close it because I assume I opened the wrong app. I’m fine with this app having ads, but a full sized hard to click out of splash screen for a movie is ridiculous.

i’m getting pop up ads every few seconds on the app. sometimes multiple at once, requiring me to keep swiping out of them. i’m pretty sure this is a bug because i genuinely don’t believe they would kill an app this way
Just ban the pop-up ads man
I love this app and I use it every day. You get ads on the free version and they’re kind of annoying of course, but nothing intolerable, it doesn’t ruin the app for me. This past month however they’ve allowed these new stupid pop-up ads that make the app unusable. The ads force at least one, up to 10 layered, full-screen video pop-ups (just AI art and some generic ad-copy slop), and the malware follows you across the entire app once it’s been activated, so you can’t even just close them all and be done with it. Has caused me to just give up and close the app many a time.
There’s no in-app way to report ads for being spam/inappropriate/etc, so I have no recourse it seems besides leaving a review on here. You can’t force me into buying premium by making your app unusable, I will just stop using it. Ban that advertiser, and no more pop-ups please.
Also the new Letterboxd store on the main page is annoyingly emphasized by the UI. Quit that

I am not a fan of the Nanocrowd recommendations that letterboxd uses. Ai does not belong anywhere near art.

Letterboxd is spamming AI generated, full screen adds. I’m getting 2-3 per minute. Almost impossible to use the app.

Ads from off screen are going full screen, completely blocking content, and then directing me to a website which closes my app and opens Safari! Horrible experience, because fix this.

It’s impossible to do anything on this app without a dozen AI ads popping up. I had to swipe out of three ads before I was able to press any actual button on the app itself. The ads are completely nonsensical as well, I genuinely don’t understand the point.

It’s a fun app, and I love sharing movie reviews. However I have to warn users that this app often has data breaches, I have had personal information exposed through these breaches. Please beware especially if you are considering sharing payment info for their subscriptions. Also, there are malicious requests that come through this app onto my home WiFi. For an app this popular, it’s extremely disappointing that they expose themselves to high amounts of adware and do not use industry best practices for their actual infrastructure.

confusing for no reason
why are there a millions buttons to press & it’s not obvious what they do. for example, the differences between diary, reviews, and films under your profile are so minuscule and not explained. this app could be 10x easier to use but nooo let’s just add random buttons and lightning bolts and everyone will get it. as someone who uses this heavily for the social aspect- the followers/following is too hidden- finding users could be easier, activity could be more obvious in general and the app is not pretty to look at. also i wish i could comment on my review comments. why even add the feature if i could only like someone’s comment on my review and not say anything back? these are social media features that the app should put more time into instead of its buttons that are hardly used-who even uses “lists” and “journals” at the top? i like the concept and the ability to review/make lists but the app itself neeeeds work. plz downsize it hurts my brain to just do simple tasks it’s so frustrating. Btw I lost 3 years worth of reviews because I was pressing “rate” and not “add to diary”

Logged in today to see rentals are now on my front page with no way to remove. I don’t mind rentals being in the app, but please don’t force bloat into the experience for those uninterested

My desire for this app doesn’t excuse its awful functionality
I love being able to log my films and my ratings. But, to be honest the app kind of sucks. Antiquated use of ads on the free version and minimal benefits to upgrade to pro other than avoiding ads. The UI feels as dated as its ad strategy. Maybe it’s meant to feel like an early 2000s message board and if so then it succeeds 100%. Dare I say the app is overrated
