Splitwise has made it very difficult to use a 3rd party app to pay others and they now route you to their own payment system - however while people can send you any amount through their system, you can only withdraw $2000 a week! So they keep your money and earn interest off it! Total scam

Ridiculously long authentication process to add payment method. Weeks, a bit worthless.

Splitwise used to be a great. All the useful features are now behind a paywall, rendering the app completely useless. Don’t waste your time. A calculator is better than this.

Useless app
I downloaded Splitwise to track expenses on a family vacation. One complicating factor is that we had a pool of money to use up first, then we wanted to split anything beyond that pool of funds. The app doesn’t handle that situation, but I thought it would make it easy for us to keep track of what each person paid for throughout the trip anyway. NOPE! It didn’t do that at all. It just does the math for you and expects you to trust it. All I needed was an itemized list of expenses and a summary of how much each person paid in order to settle up at the end. The only option really is to view the “activity” history and manually do the math to get to these numbers. Having to pore over the details and calculate things myself defeats the whole purpose of the app. Even if I was splitting everything equally with a group, I would need to have the underlying details available to perform basic checks that we included all the expenses and filed them
correctly. Ultimately the app only led to confusion and errors. Tracking it by hand or in a simple spreadsheet would be greatly superior to using the Splitwise app.

Pro ruined this app
This app used to be amazing, but now with the introduction of “pro”, it’s gone rotten. If you don’t have a pro account (for a monthly fee) you can only add 3 expenses per day. If you only use this app for group travel, the pro subscription is not worth it. Additionally, it forces you to use SplitPay - Splitwise’s own form of payment. Even if you have not opted in to the program, people can send you a payment via SplitPay. To retrieve the money, you are forced to connect your banking information. I wish it would connect to Venmo as an option, or force the payer to send a Venmo transaction if a user does not have SplitPay enabled. Sure, it made tracking expenses easy, but it added a ton of work to my plate to actually receive my money. I wasn’t thrilled about having to share bank access with another app. I’ll be searching for an alternative option for my next group trip.
Money Kidnappers
If you get any money through Splitwise pay, they hold it hostage and make it impossible to deposit unless you provide them and plaid with all of your data including account balances locations everything. Have ChatGPT put a spreadsheet together or just do basic math yourself.

Locked their MAIN feature behind a paywall. Would’ve considered upgrading for extra features, but limiting expense entries is pathetic. You can only post 4 expenses before you’ve reached your “Daily Limit” what a joke. It’s sad, I used to love this app and recommend it to all my friends and family.

That then pressures others to connect their bank accts. It sends people on both ends msgs that the OTHER has to cancel or let funds expire. #gaslighting. This leads to delays in payment and erodes trust between friends.

Used to be Good
They’ve recently pushed too hard toward their paid subscription, the free version is unusable now. There are tons of free alternatives without all of the ads and restrictions.
Not user friendly
Won’t let me add a debit card. Won’t let me us my balance to partially pay a balance owed.

Full of bugs
Have outstanding debt show up that was taken care of two years ago…from a friend who has since passed on…thanks for reminding me.
Now a debt I entered for a completely different event…somehow split the balance evenly with 80% to one person…10% to another person…and 5% to two different people…all while forgetting there were 8 other people to split it evenly amongst.
Oh yeah and if they did pay the completely unevenly divided amount. I would not have access to it because of the already settled debt from two years ago.

Unusable without getting pro
I get having a pro version, but only allowing 5 expenses per day is insane. I was trying to calculate my trip I just finished and had to go back to just using Google Sheets. Reviewing then deleting. Can’t believe I used to put people onto this app.

Used this app for a trip once and it was great. Tried using it this year and the ads make it impossible. Especially for something you can just do on ChatGPT way easier. Good luck splitwise! Deleting app now.

No way to cancel, support is not helpful. Does not show up in subscriptions and their descriptions are not clear.

Ridiculous that there’s no option to pay people through the app unless you use a third party… so what’s the point?

Oy! Why is this so difficult to delete old (decade old!) trips and add a new one?? Do I have to have a paid account to do a simple split trip?
No longer a helpful app
I’ve used Splitwise for years and it’s always been great! Then they changed the free option to only include 4 expenses a day. It’s now taking a week for my friends and I to add the expenses from one weekend trip! We’ve gone back to using a spreadsheet. I fully understand this app wants to make money, but it’s frustrating as a user to lose capability we used to have.
Paywall is crazy
Not sure if Splitwise is going through a financial crisis, but the nonstop full page prompts to get you to subscribe is irritating. And a 4 expense limit per day?? Just make it a fully paid app at this point instead of irritating users
Bad experience for free version
The App used to be fantastic, then they put everything behind a pay wall. Limited expense entries per day and now to settle up payment you have to pay though them. No longer can you mark you paid them (if you’re still able to they really hide this feature).
Zero stars
This app does not work good at all!!!! We did it for a bach trip and it kept telling people we owed the wrong people and we all ended up having to calculate everything ourselves outside of the app. Only thing useful is that it divided it evenly. I connected my bank to pay people back asap…never worked so whats the point of that lol
It’s not a free app
I was adding my expenses and just before last few expenses I was asked to switch to Pro to proceed. I didn’t even get a full free trial. I could do it just on phone and using calculator. Now it’s showing me that amount is owed with no option to update that is paid by owing member. If it’s not paid using SW it doesn’t Megan is not paid🙂
Beware the Paywall
This app has recently added a subscription (“Pro”) option that hides all its utility behind a $5 per month (per user!) paywall. I used it for years… and am now embarrassed I ever recommended it to friends. Just use a spreadsheet, it’ll be cheaper and easier than this app

Unable to log in
This application does not allow you to log in with Google. If you previously used “Log in with Google” on the Splitwise web app or Android mobile app, you will not be able to log in to your account on the iOS app.
3 transaction limit and ads galore
unless you’re using the paid version, the app is almost unusable. there is a 10 second ad before entering a transaction and you’re limited to three a day.
Still can’t turn off transaction notifications on Pro

Worst cost split app of all time
Where does the money go? How can I configure options for this? There is no consistency. I use this once per year because the group decided it would save time and effort vs manual expense tracking in a spreadsheet. It has created new and unique problems all over the place.
Receiving money is like playing whack a mole. How can 2 different users submit payment and the money goes to 2 different PayPal accounts? Like I said, I use this once per year so it’s not because I changed any settings.
Now I see that there is actually money sitting in Splitwise? What do I do with this? Where can I send it?

Bad experience
If people send you money via Splitwise you don’t receive the money for 2 days and it expires if you don’t connect your bank account and transfer the money within 14 days. That’s a messed up way for an app to make money. I used to be a huge fan of this app for group travel but this is off putting.
