I’ve been using Splitwise for years and generally liked it. However, some friends recently started paying me with Splitwise pay instead of Venmo. Not a huge deal except when I went to transfer the money out, I was told there was an $800/wk limit. It will take me a month to get my money out. Focus on what you’re good at, because it certainly isn’t being a bank.

Frustrating: Forced Upgrade Popups with No Way to Dismiss
Splitwise used to be a great app, but the constant push to upgrade has made it really frustrating to use. Every time I try to add an expense, a popup forces me to consider upgrading to Pro-and worse, there’s no clear or easy way to dismiss it. I’m basically blocked from doing a simple, core function unless I deal with this interruption first.
It feels aggressive and disruptive, especially for something that used to be quick and seamless. If the free version can’t even handle basic expense entry without nagging, it defeats the purpose of using the app. Please fix this-at the very least, give users a clear option to close the popup and continue using the app normally.

Have a Bachlorette weekend coming up and we put only 2 expenses in so far. It confirmed it was going to split evenly between each person then ended up charging one of them the full price while also still charging the other individuals the split price. Then it had a payment in the amount owed to me sent to the other girl that added an expense to the group. It’s definitely got a lot of bugs still needing to be worked out! Definitely don’t rely on this app to get it right!! You will have a headache on your hands later trying to figure out who paid what and what’s actually owed in the end. Would be better off without it from the get-go! It’s a great idea, but not executed well enough yet to be truly helpful!
Subscription needed
Splitwise used to be fantastic and so user friendly now there’s a paywall to access basic features and even use it. Do not recommend. I used to use it all the time 2021 and 2022 all the features for free
Subscription Hell
I used Splitwise when they were first starting up. It had incredible utility and I brought my entire friend group onto it. Then they got greedy… They stripped the app of 90% of its utility without a subscription.
1. You are limited to adding 5 expenses per day.
2. They added an *arbitrary* 10 second timer when adding multiple expenses.
3. The app used to have an itemized bill feature. No longer… it’s just gone.

Confusing
Confusing why can’t I pay on the app herd with big groups right idea confusing execution
Intrusive Ads
Ads suddenly started showing up making you wait 10 seconds to add expenses. I will consider removing this rating after this has been fixed.

Subscribed to pro and charged but still limited to how many expenses I can add per day. Wts???
Unusable unless you add cc
I was able to add 4 expenses before it stopped to say I have to sign up for Splitwise Pro. And while adding an expense you have to wait through an af before proceeding. Yuck.
Too complicated with the new paywall and the worst customer support
First time using the app after they started charging for it. We had continuous issues while trying to settle our expenses. Virtually no helpful Customer Support, other than email, which never seemed to understand the kind of help needed. Will not use this app in the future. Too much hassle.
Too Many Limitations
The new limit on how many expenses you can add each day is ridiculous, not to mention you have to sit through an ad for their premium service for half of them. Then if you go to sign up for the paid version, they make you enter a credit card. Why is the app not integrated with Apple Pay yet that I can just click to subscribe? Not worth the trouble, an old fashioned spreadsheet will do just fine.
Useless if you don’t pay for pro subscription
You are only allowed to add one expense per day unless you pay extra for the premium service. Doesn’t help when you have multiple expenses for the day
Bait and switch
DO NOT sign up for the free trial. Instead of billing you monthly after the free trial, they automatically sign you up for a FULL YEAR and it does not allow you switch to monthly. Absolutely horrible business practice for your customers. I will never be using this app, nor will I ever recommend anyone to use this. They also do not even have a phone number to contact customer service you can only reach out by email.

You can only add three expenses per day before you are required to upgrade to subscription based pro account. You can only add one expense before waiting 10 seconds in an add for the pro account. Defeats the entire purpose of having the app. Easier to just keep track of split expenses using paper and a pen.

Middle Man for payments
My friends are using this app to settle our trip transactions. Even though I’m paying by Venmo and receiving money through Venmo they make me connect a bank account and verify my address and social? I don’t need a middle man to store all of my information when the transaction goes through another app.

This worst. DO NOT USE. This app is completely useless for any large group. If payments are facilitated by Splitwise pay, the transfer limit is $2000 per week. Not day. Week! That means in many cases it could take weeks or months to eventually be reimbursed. Seems completely useless in practice. You’d be better off a working with Claude or Codex to create your own custom tracking app and coordinating payment via Zelle, Venmo or PayPal.

Horrible App
Just use excel at this point, difficult to add payments, too long to get money out of the app, limits to # of expenses you can add. Waste of phone space
Security
This app ask way too many questions that do not aid in sending people money. All that’s needed is to add Venmo or whatever and leverage whatever their security processes are.

This app is so confusing and not user friendly, it prompts for you to go “pro” to add a bank account instead of just letting you add it directly and you have to go on a hunt for the option. Do not recommend at all
Awful app now
I hate the weekly 2k withdrawal limit, I accidentally forgot to cancel my trial and pay $40 for the year which basically just allows me to use a bill splitting app normally, and I hate that you can immediately jus connect to Venmo. This app is complete trash now idk what happened. Venmo has group splitting now by the way, better to use that since it’s actually free

Receipt scanning
I purchased pro because I wanted to be able to itemize my receipts. There should be no reason I can only take a picture of a live receipt and not upload a receipt. OCR is not a requirement of the camera. It literally takes a picture and uploads it and then applies OCR. I am able to take a picture of someone else’s phone and that is possible. This is silly. I love the app and would pay more to be able to simply upload an image to itemize the upload. Is the only feature missing in my opinion.

Spot wise has a great app if you can figure out how to add people to it.
You can have it access to your contacts, but it won’t automatically add them. If you search for them in your expense groups, you can’t find them.

Used to be a great service
I’ve been using Splitwise from the beginning and now they are squeezing you to upgrade. You can only upload 3 receipts a day. My wife and I use it for monthly expenses and travel costs and now we will be looking for another alternative. Otherwise you have to pay for both accounts monthly. Disappointed, we have been loyal users for over 5 years.
Non reliable payment platform
Used to be a good app, but added so much limitations and pay to use features, it’s not the best anymore! Recently a friend paid back to me using Splitwise pay, and I have no trust to give my bank account or other details to such unreliable app.
Simplify settle up
It would be great if I could click on an expense, pay my share and have the expense reflect my payment. Instead I have to go through and double check what I’ve already paid on. Frustrating for sharing bills with housemates
